What Is WarBSD?

Q: What is WarBSD? Another split of the *BSD codebase?
A: No. WarBSD is a FreeBSD 5.0 based "war driving kit". It was inspired by WarLinux.

5 September 2005 - Ok, as you can see, I've not done anything with WarBSD for quite some time. Both work and school
are to blame for this (I have little free time between the two). I know there is still an interest in this project, and I
doubt if many people have been able to get it running on their systems. With all the improvements in the 5.4 release, and 6.0
in the beta stage, a lot of the bugs and problems I was having with the 5.0 release are probably fixed. Hmm.... Also, if anyone
is intereted in contributing to WarBSD, please send (or re-send, I get a lot of junk mail) an e-mail to me at olivas <at> eurisko.ws.
Please make sure you put in the subject line [WARBSD] so that I know it isn't (or shouldn't be) spam but something relating to
WarBSD. Thanks!

28 March 2005
- I just cleaned out a bunch of spam from my inbox and noticed 2 emails sent a while back regarding improvements to WarBSD. Sorry to those who wrote me and I didn't reply. If you are still interested, please e-mail me again putting [WARBSD] in the subject line. Thank you.

17 January 2005
- I really need to do something with WarBSD. It's been over a year since anything new was released. I see
people come to the site and download the WarBSD files. I wonder who really uses it (and if they can even boot it, since
some systems had problems with it). Hmm....

21 November 2004 - I'm playing with WarBSD again, this time I am using a FreeBSD-5.3 kernel and the NanoBSD build
environment located in /usr/src/tools/tools/nanobsd. The PicoBSD build envionment was getting to be too much of a pain
to play with, and I wanted something that wasn't too weird to use to build WarBSD. I've been able to get FreeBSD-5.3 to
boot ok with the NanoBSD build off a CD. It doesn't know how to mount a root yet, that's next. I just wanted to see how
it would boot (the PicoBSD build would panic right after the loader would try to start the kernel). Using the NanoBSD build
environment (which is meant to build a full system with stuff stripped out from the get to) I hope more systems will be able
to boot WarBSD. As usual, I'm working on this as time permits.

09 August 2004 - Well, I've been able to get the FreeBSD-5.2.1 kernel to compile and have the .ISO successfully boot under a
VM. I will now update all the utility programs that I included with the last release of WarBSD (0.2.2) and go from there. I am also
looking to add to the utility programs that are distributed with WarBSD. If you have a favorite program that you would like me
to look at (I need to be able to get the source and auto configuration scripts, no binaries) please use this link to mail me your
suggestions. I have also setup bugzilla as a test for tracking various bugs in WarBSD. Click on the "Bug Reports" link to the left
if you want to check it out. I may eventually move the server that it is hosted on.

25 July 2004
- I'm updating my laptop that I build WarBSD on to FreeBSD-5.2.1. After the upgrade, I am going to see how WarBSD builds and fix any build environment errors. After that, I will update the programs that I've included with the last release of WarBSD. That should be a good starting point for a new WarBSD release (which is long overdue). I will release the updated version of WarBSD once I get all the kinks in the build process worked out.

4 July 2004 - Happy 4th of July! I've been out development mode for way too long now. Time to update my codebase and see what I can add to WarBSD. Digiflux.org is down since the guy who runs the server can't seem to keep the thing up for more than a few days at a time (and I'm not able to educate him on running a server, since I'm about a 2 hour plane flight away from him now). Anyways, enough griping.. Have a fun and safe Fourth of July!

9 April 2004
- Happy Easter! Ok, I admit it, I am a slacker, but I've been busy getting settled in. I move into my new place on the 13th. Hopefully I can get my internet connection hooked up fairly quickly so I can start moving forward on the development of WarBSD again. It's been frustrating trying to do work on it when you don't have all your resources available. Anyways, I just wanted to let everyone know that I haven't dropped the project, it's only on hold for now.

16 Mar 2004 - It's been almost a year since the initial WarBSD release. Eventhough I am still settling into my new place, I'm looking to pickup development on the next version this weekend.

31 Jan 2004 - I've been working on the next release of WarBSD. This version will be based on the FreeBSD 5.2 kernel, add the use of kernel modules, and add a few other things too. I'm also getting ready to move here in a week, so the release might be delayed until after I settle in.

13 Nov 2003
- I have moved the WarBSD mailing list from digiflux.org to mailsrv.dis.org. To make the transition easier (it should be fairly easy), I have created aliases for the new warbsd list on digiflux.org. This ensures any e-mail sent to the old address are re-directed to the proper place.

11 Nov 2003
- I have moved WarBSD from digiflux.org/warbsd to warbsd.com. Thanks to Pete Shipley for providing the hosting space! I also re-did the website -- making it a little nicer looking. I'm still trying to figure out what I want for the basic layout, so it will change (not everything works just yet). I should have everything working within the next week.
